Fantômas/Melvins Big Band

Live From London 2006

BY Keith CarmanPublished Sep 26, 2008

Confirming there’s no end to the weirdness of either Fantômas or Melvins, especially when mashed together in Frankenstein-esque fashion, Live From London 2006 is a masterful piece of insanity. Featuring tracks brutalized via improvisational tinkering by the likes of Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo, Buzz Osborne, Trevor Dunn, Dale Crover and David Scott Stone, this chaotic super-group pummel through collaborations, evidenced on sole release Millennium Monsterwork, as well as trademark opuses from each respective band. Reinventing the term "noisecore” through jarring time signatures, frantic wails and electronic noodling over cacophonous guitars, this magnificent hour-plus endeavour into moody atmospheres, aural dirges and onstage lunacy is vital in understanding how impromptu musical craziness begets pure genius. Factor in an amusingly non-related commentary by the likes of Ipecac co-owner Greg Werckman, Crover, Osborne and diminutive actor Danny DeVito, of all people, for an all-out onslaught of creative psychosis.
