Legendary guitarist and folk singer Doc Watson would've turned 100 this March (he died in 2012), and in celebration, FLi Records/Budde Music is releasing I Am a Pilgrim: Doc Watson at 100, a new covers compilation that features contributions from Jerry Douglas, Dolly Parton, Roseanne Cash, Steve Earle and many more.
And today, we get to hear Dolly's cover of Watson's "The Last Thing on My Mind." The song was written by Tom Paxton in the early '60s and was a staple of Watson's catalogue, but "The Last Thing on My Mind" was also part of Parton's repertoire — she released a version in 1967 with Porter Wagoner, and Watson and Parton performed it together in 2001 at MerleFest.
"Doc Watson is everyone's hero and a great guitar player. Some say he is the absolute best, and I was honoured to get to work with him a few times in my career," said Parton in a statement.
Nora Brown, Jeff Parker and Matthew Stevens, Jack Lawrence, Corey Harris, Ariel Posen, Valerie June and Bill Frisell, Yasmin Williams, Chris Eldridge, Lionel Loueke and Marc Ribot also contributed to I Am a Pilgrim: Doc Watson at 100.
