Dillinger Escape Plan

Under The Running Board

BY Dave SynyardPublished Nov 19, 2008

Under The Running Board is a reissue of Dillinger's legendary Relapse EP, with nine live tracks from a tour with the Misfits from October 2000. Much like any, or more aptly all, of the Dillinger Escape Plan's releases, Under The Running Board is technically malicious, dizzying with rhythm and heavy as any fan could bear. Board's live songs are performed at a high standard, offering little indication that they were recorded live, save for the audience and slightly reduced sonic fidelity. The band at this point still featured Dimitri Minakakis on vocals and Chris Pennie on drums. With a collection of songs that dwell in Dillinger's initial experimental/boundary-destroying phase, which would eventually blossom into Calculating Infinity, this album offers great hindsight into the band's musical growth. The reissued tracks include "The Mullet Burden," "Sandbox Musician" and "Abe The Cop" from the 1997 recording session with producer Steve Evetts (Sepultura and He Is Legend) and the reissued Board finishes with a cover of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid," recorded for Hydra Head's In These Black Days series but never released, which is somewhat spoiled by its jazzy extended middle section.
