Devon Welsh released his lovely sophomore record True Love just before the pandemic (as well as spoken word album Click Here Now!), and he evidently used the ensuing downtime to conjure up a third in Come with Me If You Want to Live, which he's announcing today.

Arriving March 15 via American Dreams Records, the album — written as a soundtrack for "a film that doesn't and probably shouldn't exist" — was mixed by Randall Dunn and mastered by Phil Bova with various instrumentation by Kyle Jukka. Laura Callier and Devin Shaffer handled the cover art and album design, respectively.

Welsh shared the following statement about the record:

I wrote this album over the last few years at home and had a good time doing it. It's a soundtrack for a film that doesn't exist and probably shouldn't exist. In that sense it's a fantasy album. But a lot of the songs are personal fantasies, so it's also something of a personal album. I hope it's a fun album in the sense that it inspires your own personal action movie. So you could call it an action album. It would be fair to call it a pop album, in that I would be pleased if it were popular. It's my album, but I want to give it to you. So it's your album now.

You should take the title both as an homage to
The Terminator and also as me saying to you, "I want you to live." So in that sense, the album is about living. I am still alive.

News of the record arrives alongside lead single "You Can Do Anything," which comes with a video by Jason Harvey, using the visuals to interpret the album's themes through "a beefed-up superhero version of Welsh." That version is presented inside a digital dream world that feels like a mix between Xavier: Renegade Angel and Carol & the End of the World with some TikTok dancing tastefully folded in.

"I hope that as you listen to this song, you will feel what the title says," Welsh shared. "It's the opening scene to the film, where we meet the protagonist in the midst of an explosive sequence full of melodrama and winks at the camera. If I constructed it correctly, the song should fill you with a sense of momentum and can-do attitude."
