Last year, we learned that Decemberists main man Colin Meloy had written an adventure novel for children. Entitled Wildwood, the singer revealed at the time that it was illustrated by his wife Carson Ellis (the artist behind the Decemberists' distinctive album packaging). Now, the book has finally been given a release date.
In a new mailout to fans, Meloy confirmed that the book will arrive on shelves on August 30 via HarperCollins, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon. If you sign up for the Wildwood mailing list or "like" the novel on Facebook, you will get an immediate free download of the first four chapters.
This project has been 12 years in the making. Once it's out, Ellis and Meloy will head out on a book tour. The dates haven't been announced, but the author assured fans, "Carson and I will be galavanting around the country this fall to do talks and readings, so we expect to see all your brilliant, shining faces basked in that autumnal light (as refracted through the UV-coated glass of one of your fine, local bookstores)."
Check out the official website for more info, and listen to the couple talk about the book's inspiration in the video below. In the clip, you'll also see plenty of artwork from the novel. Yup -- this looks pretty much like a Decemberists album minus the music.
