Dave Matthews Band's 1996 hit "Crash into Me" enjoyed a reappraisal a few years ago when it was featured prominently in the movie Lady Bird, but now the group's singer-songwriter has admitted that he regrets the song's horny lyrics, since it makes it difficult to sing now that he's in his 50s.

Speaking with GQ, Matthews said, "There's always a funny regret that I have, because there's this throwaway line that, while we recording, I jokingly [sang] at the end of the song about the skirt, that I threw in there in one take as a joke. The rest of it is, for me, was always a little bit lighter, but it made the whole thing more about sex than I wanted to admit it was."

The line he's talking about is, "Hike up your skirt a little more / And show the world to me." He may think of it as a "throwaway," but he's slightly underselling how prominent of a line it is: he sings the line twice, and it's immediately followed by, "I watch you there through the window and I stare at you / Wear nothing but you wear it so well."

These lines make Matthews not want to sing the song anymore. He admitted, "It's a pretty sexy song. It's hard for me to sing it now that I'm in the second half — that's what I like to call it — of my time. This is the song of a 26-year-old, a 25-year-old. Now I'm a 56-year-old, so it changes what you want to sing about. I mean, I still want to sing about it, but I'm like, 'Easy pal. Rein it in.' I throw my back out too often to sing that song."

It's worth pointing out that, even if Matthews finds "Crash into Me" hard to sing, he occasionally does it anyway. DMB performed the song on May 9 in Mexico City.

Someone needs to ask producer Steve Lillywhite what he thinks about all this. Back in 2021, Lillywhite — who produced the 1996 album Crashclaimed that he was the first person to have sex while listening to the song.

Dave Matthews Band released the album Walk Around the Moon this past Friday (May 19).
