Chuck D's A-Team

COMIC

BY James KeastPublished Sep 1, 2006

Flavor Flav is already a cartoon, but now he’s a comic book too. The debut issue of Public Enemy, written by front-man Chuck D (with Adam Wallenta), posits the hip-hop legends as an A-Team style counter-terrorism team too radical for "the man,” a threat to the evil plans of the New World Order (honestly, that’s what the bad guys are called). It’s set in a 2006 in which P.E. are a revolutionary force worthy of comparison to Malcolm and MLK — not one in which Flav is a clown on an MTV dating show — and Chuck is on-call as a performer, speaker and threat to international corporate interests. Professor Griff, DJ Lord and other bulked-up P.E. members flex in the background, a plot unfolds about a victim of medical experiments needing the Underground Railroad’s assistance and readers wonder how delusional Chuck D really is about the current state of Public Enemy.
