Funky Canadian duo Chromeo have announced a new album. Adult Contemporary is out February 16, 2024, and a video for the single "Personal Effects" is out now.
A press release compares the album to Steely Dan, with the pair's usual synths mixed with live instrumentation, plus horns and strings. It's mixed by Morgan Geist (Storm Queen, Metro Area) and mastered by Alex Gopher (Phoenix, Air), with the only feature coming from La Roux. The core duo of Dave 1 and P-Thugg wrote and produced every song themselves.
The album is said to explore "what it means to be funky in your 30s and 40s," with the title referring to being an adult in the contemporary world. It's available to pre-order here.
Below, watch a video for "Personal Effects" directed by Spencer Ford. Chromeo's Dave 1 explained it was inspired by a pilot reminding passengers to remember their personal effects. He added, "You notice that long instrumental bit at the end? That's definitely a motif on the album: extended sections where we let the music ride out. Adult Contemporary is a meditation on modern, mature relationships, which means: if we gotta sing about curling irons, so be it."
