Cat Power Pays Tribute to Frank Ocean, the Pogues on New 'Covers' Album

Listen to the singer-songwriter's renditions of "Bad Religion" and "A Pair of Brown Eyes" now

Singer-songwriter Cat Power (née Chan Marshall) has announced the follow-up to 2018's Wanderer with a new album, simply titled Covers: a collection of — you guessed it — covers.

Marshall takes on the likes of Frank Ocean and the Pogues on the release slated for early next year, but you can listen to her spin on Channel Orange single "Bad Religion" and the singer's personal favourite performance of "A Pair of Brown Eyes" from the record now.

Produced entirely by the artist herself, she reimagines songs by Iggy Pop, Bob Segar, Nick Cave, Billie Holliday, Jackson Browne, the Replacements and more. Covers also includes a rework of her own "Hate" from 2006's The Greatest.

"Performing covers is a very enjoyable way to do something that feels natural to me when it comes to making music," Marshall said in a statement, explaining the organic beginnings of her "Bad Religion" interpretation after having incorporated lyrics from it into her song "In Your Face" while performing on tour.

"That song was bringing me down," she said of her own track, "so I started pulling out lyrics from 'Bad Religion' and singing those instead of getting super depressed."

You can hear the musicians's rendition below alongside her Pogues cover, and check out the full album tracklist ahead of its January 14 release via Domino.
