Brookside Mall

"Preservation"

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Feb 27, 2017

Fredericton's Brookside Mall introduced themselves on last year's Young Champion EP, and now the band are back to follow that up with a new single titled "Preservation." It's the title track off an upcoming EP, and a song that's heavily rooted in nostalgia.

"'Preservation' was written in two acts," the band's Brendan MaGee tells Exclaim! "The first verse traces my final trip through an adopted city, in conflicting states of anguish and relief. The second is a collage of backdrops from a trip taken shortly thereafter, which marked the first time I could lucidly reflect on what went wrong. The chorus weaves these two memory sets together, in a sincere, plainspoken sentiment about acceptance and forging ahead."

The sentiment in the lyrics is paired with emotive vocals and wistful harmonies, and backed by twanging guitars, piano embellishments and a steady rhythm section.

Brookside Mall's sophomore EP Preservation was recorded between August 2016 and January of this year, and it's due out April 14 through Front Porch Records. Right now, scroll past the band's upcoming live shows to listen to the song of the same name below.
