Black Moth Super Rainbow's Tobacco Announces 'Ultima II Massage'

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Feb 24, 2014

Mysterious Black Moth Super Rainbow leader Tobacco is stepping aside from his experimental collective for a moment to serve up another electronic solo set. This time, the Pittsburgh psych figure will unleash a synth-heavy set titled Ultima II Massage, and it arrives May 13 through Ghostly International.

The solo record, Tobacco's third, follows 2010's Maniac Meat, and according to a press release, this latest collection of "aural deparavity" has him pushing the boundaries of his electronic mash-up skills. The album is said to blend blips of Boards of Canada and Gary Numan and snippets from '80s horror films with vocoder work, analogue synths and "blown rhythms." Aiding Tobacco on the LP is past collaborator Brian LeBarton, who screams on "Streaker" under his alter ego Notrabel.

"I wanted to push each song just enough, so that even when the album's at its wildest, it's something you can zone out to," Tobacco said in a statement. "It feels like a definitive end to a concept I've been trying to perfect forever. Maniac Meat was linear. This time I wanted to do a lot of different things and have them come together as one meditative piece. At least for myself."

Despite the zen direction of that quote, the record is still said to deliver spazzy punk moments, leading Tobacco to admit: "This might be my most purposely difficult album yet, but I promise if you let it in, it can fuck you up."

You can stream the album's previously premiered "Lipstick Destroyer," originally on 7-inch through the Volcom Entertainment Vinyl Club in 2013, below.
