Birds of Avalon

Outer Upper Inner

BY Scott A. GrayPublished Apr 27, 2008

As at home synchronising fuzzy, skanked-out guitar riffs as they are belting out tasteful vocal harmonies, Birds of Avalon have crafted a compelling six-song EP of high-grade psychedelic rock. Out Upper Inner is one of the best takes on classic rock revisioning I’ve heard in a long time. It’s stuffed with unabashed pop and rock bombast verging on glam — think Queen shuffling members with Pink Floyd and bringing David Bowie along to play sax — but there’s a lot of territory covered in such a short release. "The Reeds” rocks as hard as Sabbath or QOTSA but opts for a more precise and angular structure. BOA’s brash psych rock stance, coupled with the mature and diverse songwriting on Outer Upper Inner, makes them a band to look out for.
