Be Good Tanyas

Blue Horse

BY Michael BarclayPublished Feb 1, 2001

Spooky, drowsy gothic folk performed by three western women with voices like junkie angels, like Freakwater with better songs. This Vancouver trio delicately delivers a mixture of traditional and original material that sounds better after midnight, somewhere where shadows dance with suggestion around the campfire and the dawn seems days away. The quavering three-part harmonies of Frazey Ford, Samantha Parton and Trish Klein (who also illustrated the beautiful cover) intimately tickle the ear alongside their mandolins and banjos. On the rousing closer, "Light Enough To Travel," they step into the daylight and unbottle their inner country-rockers.
