Apoptygma Berzerk

Kathy's Song (Come Lie Next To Me)

BY Romina WendellPublished May 1, 2001

The second single, "Kathy's Song," off Apoptygma Berzerk's (aka Stephan Groth's) latest album, Welcome to Earth, gets the remix treatment by electronic artists VNV Station, Beborn Beton, and Ferry Corsten. The original version of "Kathy's Song (Come Lie Next To Me)," as well as all five remixes, which layer thick club beats over Apoptygma's trance inspired synth-pop, start off good but go nowhere. Each new variation of "Kathy's Song" offers little originality or significant enough alteration to deliver it from its inherent Euro-pop feel. It is doubtful that any amount of remixing could rescue this bland song from Groth's un-enthused vocals, which are reminiscent of the Pet Shop Boys but even less lyrically inspired. Though "Kathy's Song" may find a fan amongst the indiscriminate remix junkie, it is one song best forgotten.
