Alvvays Finally Bring 'Blue Rev' from Behind the Rink to NPR's Tiny Desk

Molly Rankin is taking over for Bob Boilen now

Over a year on from releasing Blue Rev, their third album and Exclaim!'s best of 2022, Alvvays have, at long last, gone through the ritual of performing an NPR Tiny Desk concert.

Apparently the good folks at NPR had been trying to make an Alvvays Tiny Desk performance happen for a while before it actually did. Ever-meticulous in their pursuit of perfection, the band had initially balked at the constraints of the performance series — particularly the limitations they place on the use of reverb.

"It's been a long time coming," frontwoman Molly Rankin acknowledged of their appearance at NPR's infamously cutely cluttered office after opening the set with "Belinda Says," which has been nominated for a Grammy. "We've not yet worked up the courage to do this until today."

But of course, they sounded tight as ever — albeit slightly different without their usual stratus clouds of reverb — as they made their way through the rest of the set, which also featured "Pressed," "Very Online Guy" and "Tile by Tile," as well as Rankin joking that she made a backdoor deal to take over for retiring co-founder of the concert series and All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen.
