After legal trouble over the Immortal name led to Abbath Doom Occulta's exit, he signed with Season of Mist and released a self-titled album to critical acclaim under new, simpler band name, Abbath. So when the Decibel Magazine Tour found Abbath returning to Toronto for the first time since the name change, Exclaim! TV's Aggressive Tendencies decided we had to be there to take in the performance and get behind the corpse paint with an exclusive interview.
The pre-show, bus portion of our interview found Abbath discussing his reasoning for having two guitarists, the project's lyrics, writing music with a new group of guys and more. When the interview moved to the green room post-show, Abbath had adopted a more eccentric persona, humming riffs from Repulsion, singing Judas Priest and saluting Mayhem's Attila. To add to the fun, High on Fire guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike also showed up to talk about weed, speed, pronouncing Abbath's name and what exactly it takes to be one of the Sons of Northern Darkness.
