Willem Dafoe has revealed his role in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice 2 as the long-awaited sequel inches ever closer to hitting theatres.

The Hollywood legend told Variety this weekend that his new character is an afterlife detective with acting roots.

"I play a police officer in the afterlife, so I'm a dead person. And in life, I was a B-movie action star, but I had an accident, and that's what sent me to the other side," he said. "But because of my skills, I became a detective character in the afterlife. So that's my job. But it's coloured by the fact of who I was [when I was alive]: a B-movie action star."

He'll join a cast currently comprised mainly of actors reprising their roles from the 1988 spooky season staple, including Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara and Michael Keaton as the titular ghoul.

Fellow newcomers to the film include Jenna Ortega as Ryder's daughter and O'Hara's granddaughter, and Justin Theroux in an unknown role.

After leading us on a rollercoaster ride in which it was confirmed, then shelved, then confirmed again, Beetlejuice 2 is currently slated to hit theatres in September 2024.
