After it was announced last year that Will Smith's 2007 zombie apocalypse film I Am Legend would be getting a sequel involving Michael B. Jordan, he's finally divulged details of the plot.

In a video shared to Instagram last night, Smith — whose character Robert Neville died in the official ending of the movie as shown in theatres — revealed that, in order to go ahead with the sequel, returning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman is going to base the script off of the alternate ending released on the DVD cut of the first film.

"The script just came in," he said in the post. "In the first one, in the theatrical version, my character died. And everybody's like, 'Well, wait a minute, how are you gonna make a part two if his character...' But on the DVD, there was an alternate version of the ending of the movie where my character lived. We're going with the mythology of the DVD version where my character lived, and I can't tell you any more, but Michael B. Jordan is in and we're doing it."

While, in the theatrical ending, Neville blows himself up in a sacrifice to protect fellow survivors Anna (Alice Braga) and Ethan (Charlie Tahan), in the alternate ending, he reaches an understanding of the zombies' humanity and travels with Anna and Ethan in search of other survivors.

There's been no word on Tahan's (who most recently appeared as Wyatt Langmore in Ozark) involvement in the sequel, but Braga has expressed interest in returning as Anna. Jordan's role is currently undetermined.

Back in 2021, Goldsman had to remind people that I Am Legend is fictional, and not anti-vax propaganda — so, hopefully, people don't take the sequel as such. It's currently in pre-production, with a release date and further cast information yet to be revealed.
