Will Arnett Is the Answer to the Toronto Maple Leafs' Goaltending Woes

Watch him stymie Wayne Gretzky with nothing but a glove, blocker and stick

With the NHL playoffs fast approaching, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been forced to contend with some issues in net; an injury to starting goaltender Jack Campbell and inconsistent play from Petr Mrazek chief among them. Enter Will Arnett, the Toronto-born actor and aspiring goaltender who looks destined to backstop the blue and white to a Stanley Cup.

Arnett made his case to get the call yesterday (March 23), appearing on last night's NHL on TNT broadcast to talk about his hometown team and their jersey collaboration with Justin Bieber. Knowing that the Leafs did not deal for a goaltender before the NHL trade deadline earlier this week, the studio panel gave Arnett a shot (literally) to show off his skills.

Donning only a catching glove, blocker and stick, Arnett stopped hot shots from former NHLers Anson Carter, Rick Tocchet and Wayne Gretzky. The Great One assuredly got some extra juice from watching a clip of his 802nd career goal — which made him the league's all-time goal-scoring leader — before firing away at the actor.

"As a kid growing up in Toronto, Wayne, and watching that iconic video of you and then you shooting pucks on me, man, that was unbelievable and a real honour," Arnett said to Gretzky afterwards.

Earlier this year, Arnett appeared in Netflix's Murderville. You can watch him flash the leather and join the NHL on TNT panel below.
