These Are Canada's Top Trending YouTube Videos of 2017

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Dec 6, 2017

As 2017 comes to a close, it's time to look back and reflect on the countless hours we spent mindlessly watching memes, make-up tutorials and donut reviews while pretending to work. When Canadians weren't binge racing Netflix, we were staring into the abyss of YouTube — and now the video hosting site has unveiled exactly what we spent most of our time watching in the last 12 months.

The No. 1 trending video of the year was footage of a giant sea lion pulling a young girl into the water at Steveston Fisherman's Wharf in Richmond, BC. Luckily, a bystander hopped in to rescue her and no one was injured, so you probably don't have to feel too bad about laughing at the kid.

Also making the list of the Top 10 trending vids were Eminem's anti-Trump rap cypher, the live birth of a giraffe, ping pong tricks, an in-the-wild battle between a moose and a wolf, a parody of that kid who interrupted an on-air BBC interview, the kid who stole Prince Harry's popcorn in Toronto, animated short film In a Heartbeat, a comparative review of a $1 and a $100 donut, and France 24's continuous livestream of news.

There were also plenty of music videos that caught Canadians' eye this year, with the clip from Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" topping the list. Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You," DJ Khaled's star-studded "I'm the One," Bruno Mars' "That's What I Like," Kendrick Lamar's "HUMBLE.," Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do," the Weeknd's "Reminder," Zedd and Alessia Cara's "Stay" lyric video, Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow" and Shawn Mendes' "There's Nothing Holding Me Back" rounded out the Top 10.

As for movie trailers, the biggest trending teasers were for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, IT and Thor: Ragnarok, with The Boss Baby and The Emoji Movie impressively beating out Blade Runner 2049 and working their way into the Top 10, as well.

The highest trending videos were calculated by taking into consideration user engagement, measuring how often viewers commented, shared and liked the videos, in addition to how many times they viewed it.

YouTube will also release its annual "YouTube Rewind" mash-up of the most-loved videos of the year later today (December 6), and prominent Canadian stars like internet star Lilly Singh, beauty expert GiGi Gorgeous and vlogger LaurDIY have already made appearances in a trailer for the impending clip.
