Perhaps the uniquely terrible-all-year-round weather is to blame, but Canadians apparently "binge race" more original Netflix shows than anyone else in the world.
The streaming service has revealed new data about its users' viewing habits, discovering a new trend it's dubbed binge racing. The phenomenon involves viewers striving to be the first to finish an entire season of a show within 24 hours of its release.
Netflix says 8.4 million users have binge raced during their subscription tenure, noting that the number of first-day finishers has increased more than 20 times between 2013 and 2016.
"There's a unique satisfaction that comes from being the first to finish a story — whether it's the final page of a book or the last, climactic moments of your favourite TV show," Brian Wright, vice-president of original series, said in a statement. "Netflix allows you to watch in a way you never could before, and there's nothing better than seeing a show engage our members and ignite a passion for viewing."
Canada beat out every other country with the highest percentage of 24-hour watchers, finishing ahead of runners-up the United States, Denmark, Finland and Norway.
Living up to every Canadian stereotype and appeasing the Cancon gods, the program binge raced more than any other in our home and native land was The Trailer Park Boys.
Globally, the show that finished atop the list of most binge raced programs was Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life — though it seems like a bit of an amateur feat, given that the series boasted just four episodes. Fuller House, Marvel's the Defenders, The Seven Deadly Sins and The Ranch round out the top five. See the full list of the 20 most binge raced original shows down below.
