The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced that Taika Waititi's Next Goal Wins will make its world premiere as part of the 2023 festival.

The sports comedy is based on the 2014 documentary of the same name, following the national soccer football team of American Samoa — known for coming out on the losing end of the largest victory in an international match — and their goal to qualify for World Cup competition.

Next Goal Wins, which you can watch a trailer for below, stars Michael Fassbender, Oscar Kightley, Kaimana, David Fane, Rachel House, Beulah Koale, Uli Latukefu, Semu Filipo, Lehi Falepapalangi, with Will Arnett and Elisabeth Moss.

"We're thrilled to welcome Taika back to the festival and share his audacious take on the most popular sport in the world," TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey shared in a statement. "Next Goal Wins is perfect for TIFF fans of the beautiful game looking for their football fill until the 2026 World Cup arrives."

The world premiere of Next Goal Wins marks Waititi's return to TIFF following the world premiere of 2019's Jojo Rabbit, which went on to win the TIFF People's Choice Award and the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Not only was it one of the best things Exclaim! saw at TIFF that year, it was also among our Best Films of 2019.

TIFF 2023 is set to run from September 7 to 17. In May, organizers announced Elliot Page for its In Conversation With… series.

Following its world premiere at the festival, Next Goal Wins will arrive in theatres November 17.
