Italian horror icon Daria Nicolodi — the former partner of Dario Argento and the co-writer of Suspiria — has died. News broke that the actress and screenwriter passed away earlier today in Rome, though her cause of death is so far unclear. She was 70.
Born in Florence, Italy, on June 19, 1950, Nicolodi starred in multiple Argento classics, such as Profondo Rosso, Inferno, Tenebrae, Phenomena and Opera. Nicolodi also famously co-wrote 1977's Suspiria alongside Argento, and she is credited with coming up with the film's original idea.
Nicolodi and Argento had one daughter together, Asia Argento, before the couple eventually split in 1985. Nicolodi still went on to appear in other later Argento productions, such as 1991's The Sect and 2007's Suspiria sequel Mother of Tears, which also starred Asia Argento.
Outside Nicolodi's work with Dario Argento, she notably starred in Mario Bava's 1977 film Shock, as well as such movies as Macaroni and Le foto di Gioia.
In a post on Instagram today, Asia Argento wrote the following: "Rest in peace beloved mother. Now you can fly free with your great spirit and you won't have to suffer anymore. I will try to go on for your beloved grandchildren and especially for you who would never want to see me so grieved. Even if without you I miss the ground under my feet, and I feel I have lost my only true point of reference. I am close to all those who have known and loved her. I will always be your Aria, Daria."
