While British Columbia patted itself on the back during the early days of the pandemic, it's now going into serious damage control, as cases of COVID-19 surge in the province. As BC's top doctor, Bonnie Henry, has explained, the sudden rise is in large part being blamed on young people in the province, with health officials repeatedly calling out virus-spreading "private parties."
This led Premier John Horgan to put a call out to some of BC's most famous exports earlier this week, urging them to help spread the message to young people. And now Ryan Reynolds has answered Horgan's call in a very Ryan Reynolds fashion.
"This is a callout to Deadpool right now. Ryan we need your help up here. Get in touch with us. My number is on the internet," said the premier this week (rather than, say, simply enforcing lax mask policies in BC).
In response, Reynolds tweeted back at Horgan today, saying he indeed "called your office. Left a message." He then shared his voice mail to the premier.
"I'm not sure it's a great idea frankly," Reynolds says in his recorded message. "I am not sure they want medical advice from guys like me, no sir. Unless it's plastic surgery, which a lot of people don't know this, I used to be Hugh Jackman."
Despite that intro, he went on to say: "They probably don't know that thousands of young people are getting sick from coronavirus, and they are dying from it too. Of course, it's terrible that it affects our most vulnerable.
"BC is home to some of the coolest older people on earth. David Suzuki, he lives there. My Mom — she doesn't want to be cooped up in her apartment all day. She wants to be out there cruising Kitsilano Beach."
Reynolds then added: "But here's the thing — I hope young people in BC don't kill my mom, or David Suzuki, or each other. Let's not kill anyone.
"But I don't think I am the guy to deliver this message. I love parties. My favourite thing to do is sit alone in my room with a glass of gin and the first 32 seasons of Gossip Girl. Now that's a party."
