Every few months, MRA blowhard and lint-topped mayonnaise Jordan Peterson ends up in the entertainment news, usually because a musician expresses a regrettable fondness for his backwards views on gender and "political correctness." But today, he's in the news for a more satisfying reason: Olivia Wilde based a character in her new movie Don't Worry Darling on the former University of Toronto professor.
In the upcoming psychological thriller (which comes ribbed for her pleasure), Chris Pine plays a character named Frank, who Wilde has revealed is based on Peterson.
When discussing the film with Maggie Gyllenhaal for Interview Magazine, Wilde mentioned Pine's performance and said, "Terrifying. We based that character on this insane man, Jordan Peterson, who is this pseudo-intellectual hero to the incel community. You know the incels?"
Gyllenhaal, amazingly, didn't know what an "incel" was, so Wilde succinctly explained that they are "basically disenfranchised, mostly white men, who believe they are entitled to sex from women."
"They're actually succeeding in many different ways," she continued. "But this guy Jordan Peterson is someone that legitimizes certain aspects of their movement because he's a former professor, he's an author, he wears a suit, so they feel like this is a real philosophy that should be taken seriously."
Wilde described the men working on Don't Worry Darling as "evolved men … who understood what we were trying to say." No word on whether Pine went method and adopted an all-beef diet for the role.
Cast members include Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Nick Kroll and Gemma Chan — but not Shia LaBeouf, who wants everyone to know that he quit and definitely wasn't fired from the movie.
