If she hadn't mounted one of the greatest comebacks in recent memory with HBO's The White Lotus, Jennifer Coolidge could've easily been a real estate agent in another life — at least, as much is evident from Netflix's new preview of Ryan Murphy's forthcoming thriller series The Watcher.
In a new three-minute house tour, the actor shows us around what would otherwise be a perfectly normal — and even kinda bougie — house in Westfield, NJ, that is, except for a few hints that we're not exactly looking at a picture-perfect white-picket fencer.
With Coolidge suggesting that you could fit a body in the house's dumbwaiter and that you might not want to open up the bedroom curtains because of "weird neighbours," it soon becomes clear that this is no regular Zillow promo...
The official logline for The Watcher clears some things up:
Dean (Bobby Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Naomi Watts) just purchased their dream home in the idyllic suburb of Westfield, New Jersey, but after putting all of their savings into closing the deal they soon realize the neighbourhood is less than welcoming.
There's a kooky older woman named Pearl (Mia Farrow) and her brother Jasper (Terry Kinney), who sneaks into the Brannock's house and hides in their dumbwaiter. There's Karen (Jennifer Coolidge), the realtor and an old acquaintance of Nora's, who makes them feel like they don't really belong, and nosy neighbours Mitch (Richard Kind) and Mo (Margo Martindale), who don't seem to understand property lines.
Their icy welcome quickly turns into a full-blown living hell when ominous letters from someone calling themself "The Watcher" start arriving, terrorizing the Brannocks to their breaking point as the neighbourhood's sinister secrets come spilling out. Based on the true story of the infamous "Watcher" house in New Jersey.
Co-creators Murphy and Ian Brennan will serve as executive producers with Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Bryan Unkeless, Eric Newman, Paris Barclay, Naomi Watts, Ariel Schulman, Henry Joost and Scoop Wasserstein.
