BY Josiah HughesPublished Jan 14, 2016

It's time to start catching up on the movies you missed and start building up your theories about who will win, because the nominees for the 2016 Academy Awards have finally been unveiled.

The end of 2015 was cram-packed with prestige pictures vying for an awards season nod, so much so that superproducer Harvey Weinstein even wrote an op-ed criticizing studios for overdoing it with the Oscar bait. Now it's all said and done, however, and the nominees are here.

The Best Picture category is packed with excellent choices, and will surely have you scrambling to answer correctly in your betting pool. The list features The Big Short, Bridge of SpiesBrooklyn, Mad Max: Fury RoadThe MartianThe RevenantRoom and Spotlight.

As for Best Actor, Leonardo DiCaprio has yet another chance to add a little gold statue to his mantle with a nomination for The Revenant. He's joined by a bunch of people who will try to block him yet again, with noms for Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl).

The top choice for Best Actress is Brie Larson, who turned in an emotionally charged performance in Room. She's joined by Cate Blanchett (Carol), Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn).

Best Director nominees include Adam McKay for The Big Short, George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road, Alejandro Inarritu for The Revenant, Lenny Abrahamson for Room and Tom McCarthy for Spotlight.

Meanwhile, on the musical side of things, there are plenty of interesting contenders. Pop star Sam Smith joins fellow chart-topper the Weeknd in the race for Best Original Song, while Best Score is full of excellent work from Ennio Morricone (The Hateful Eight), Jóhann Jóhannsson (Sicario), Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Revenant), John Williams (Star Wars: the Force Awakens) and Thomas Newman (Bridge of Spies).

Of course, we won't learn who gets to take home the little gold dudes until the Oscars air on Sunday, February 28 on ABC. Read the full list of nominations below.
