Henry Cavill Won't Reprise 'Superman' Role: "It's Sad News"

Director James Gunn confirmed the news

Having passed the Geralt-of-Rivia torch to Liam Hemsworth for Season 4 of The Witcher, Henry Cavill has once again lost one of his most recognizable roles: Superman.

The actor confirmed the "sad news" via Instagram last night (December 14) around the same time director James Gunn came to Twitter to share the same.

The forthcoming new chapter of Superman will apparently focus "on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill," Gunn explained, adding that he and Peter Safran "had a great meeting with Henry and we're big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future."

Cavill shared, "I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life."

He continued:

This changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes. For those who have been by my side through the years... we can mourn for a bit, but we must remember... Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.

At this time, Cavill's replacement has yet to be revealed.

In the meanwhile, Cavill has been rumoured to be attached to Chad Stahelski's Highlander reboot over at Lionsgate since last year, though the actor's busy schedule has been a major hurdle to overcome in pinning him down for the role — so at least he's keeping busy!
