'Arthur' Broadcaster Begs Fans to Stop with the Dirty Memes

BY Josiah HughesPublished Aug 4, 2016

Thanks to a beloved anthropomorphic aardvark and his friends, Arthur was one of the longest running cartoon series of all time, falling just behind The Simpsons and Family Guy with a total of 239 episodes. The show is now reaching a whole new audience but for all the wrong reasons thanks to an explosion of Arthur memes.

As with Kermit sipping his tea, the Arthur memes go way beyond the characters on which they're based. Instead, they use a number of graphic screenshots to sexualize the characters.

It's pretty much exactly what happens to, well, anything in the age of social media. But WGBH, the original public broadcaster to air Arthur, is not having it.

In a new interview with the Boston Globe, the network's Kelly London said, "We certainly are lucky to have a fan base that is so engaged with Arthur, especially those millennials who grew up with him."

She added that she's "disappointed by the few that are outside of good taste," continuing to say, "our hope is that Arthur and his friends will be depicted in a way that is respectful and appropriate for all audiences."

Those sentiments are certainly not being reflected in the meme dump below. Click through at your own peril... some of these are disgusting.
