After the mysterious disappearance of Utah's Stanley Kubrick-reminiscent monolith over the weekend, another seemingly related structure has appeared on a mountain in northern Romania.
Standing approximately 13 feet out of the ground, the new monolith was discovered on Batca Doamnei Hill in the city of Piatra Neamt on Thursday (November 26). According to the Daily Mail, the new monolith stands just metres away from a national archaeological landmark, the Petrodava Dacian Fortress.
The unexplained structure bears resemblance to its Utahan cousin, in that the tall, three-sided structure is forged from steel-coloured metal. Both monoliths bear striking resemblance to Kubrick's large black rectangular structure in his 1968 classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey — however, the new monument has a circular brushed texture on its surface, making it look less like an extraterrestrial entity and more like a copycat's shop class project.
Utah's matching 12-foot otherworldly structure was originally discovered by helicopter pilot Bret Hutchings who spotted the object from above while he was assisting the Division of Wildlife Resource's search for bighorn sheep. At the time, Hutchings told KSL5 News that it was the strangest thing he'd ever come across. That one was removed by "unknown parties" on Friday (November 27).
UPDATE (12/1, 4:20 p.m. ET): While the monolith mystery may be deepening, we're now getting some answers — or at least we now have a better understanding how the one in Utah disappeared.
