Seth Meyers Gets Fred Armisen to Lead 'Late Night' Band

Although Fred Armisen is best known for his comedy, the former Saturday Night Live funnyman has strong musical ties: he's gotten a 7-inch series from Drag City, he stars in Portlandia alongside Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein, and he's played drums in numerous projects including sitting in with Les Savy Fav. Now, Armisen has taken on his biggest musical gig yet: acting as band leader for Late Night with Seth Meyers.

The group are called the 8G Band, and Meyers tweeted a photo of them (above). In the shot, Armisen is holding a guitar, suggesting that he won't be playing drums.

Obviously, Armisen already has a busy acting schedule, but it sounds like he will continue to be involved with Late Night even when he's otherwise occupied. Meyers tweeted, "Fred will curate and lead the band, and continue to run it even when he's off shooting Portlandia."

But wait, it gets even better: Stereogum points out that the band will also reportedly include Seth Jabour and Syd Butler of Les Savy Fav, plus Girls Against Boys member Eli Janney and Beyoncé live player Kim Thompson.

Late Night with Seth Meyers will premiere on February 24.
