Zooey Deschanel to Star as a Groupie in New HBO Pilot

Most moviegoers were first introduced to Zooey Deschanel in 2000, when she appeared in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous, a film based on the director's real-life experiences meeting musicians and sleeping with groupies in the '70s. Now, it's ten years later, and Deschanel's career has come full circle, as she will once again appear in a groupie-related drama, this time an HBO series based on Pamela Des Barres's tell-all memoir, I'm With the Band.

Deadline reports that Deschanel is both the executive producer and the star of the show, which describes the legendary groupie's trysts with superstars including Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon and Don Johnson.

The show is still in its formative stages, and so far is only committed to a pilot. Given Deschanel's "it girl" status, however, it's difficult to imagine the series getting rejected.

The news adds to an already busy 2010 for Deschanel. Next month, she and collaborator M. Ward will release their second album under the name She & Him, the appropriately titled Volume Two. The pair will then head out on the road for a brief tour. Unfortunately, there are no Canadian dates currently booked.
