Mondo and Death Waltz partnered up in a new business deal last year, and the two labels are keeping the momentum going with new reissues of nasty Italian undead flick Zombi 2 and Maniac Cop 2.
For Death Waltz, the label will be looking all the way back to its inaugural release, which, yes, was Fabio Frizzi's Zombi 2. The film — also known around the world as Zombie, Zombie Flesh Eaters or "the one where the zombie fights a shark underwater" — is described in a press release as a "notorious gore classic," with scenes set in New York City and the Caribbean island of Matool scored by the chilling presence of Frizzi's "magic synthesizer."
While the reissue doesn't contain any new bonus cuts, it was remastered at Abbey Road Studios and features new artwork from Tom Beauvais. It comes in pressings on clear and grey marble vinyl, is housed in a gatefold sleeve, and includes a lobby card and liner notes from Frizzi, Beauvais, actor Ian McCulloch and Stephen Thrower. You'll find a sampling of the synth work down in the player down below.
Mondo's next release makes for a bit of a full-circle moment as well, seeing as the Austin enterprise kicked off its record label division with the score to the original Maniac in 2011. Like that initial release, the music to director William Lustig's 1990 film was prepped by Jay Chattaway.
This will be the first-ever vinyl issue of Maniac Cop 2, which includes not only the film cues but the film's unsettling "Maniac Cop Rap." You'll find streams of the hip-hop-minded song from the horror film and a few instrumentals down below.
Maniac Cop 2 comes on black vinyl and limited edition "fire-coloured" vinyl, the latter a nod to the film' s molotov cocktail scene.
