The Wet Secrets Win Alberta's First PEAK Performance Project

For a number of years, the PEAK Performance Project battle of the bands contest has been offering big money to up-and-coming British Columbia artists. This year, the initiative expanded to Alberta, and now the first winner of the PEAK Performance Project Alberta has been announced: Edmonton pop combo the Wet Secrets took home the prize just hours have experiencing a serious car wreck.

As their prize, the band have won $100,953 to help further their career. They beat out fellow finalists Lauren Mann & the Fairly Odd Folk (who placed second and won $75,000) and 36? (who came in third and netted $50,000).

The finale took place last night (November 27) at Calgary's Republik Nightclub. As the Edmonton Journal points out, the Wet Secrets were involved in a highway car crash that same day on the QE2. Their van fishtailed on the road, hit a ditch and rolled over twice. This was apparently one of many crashes on the highway, due to the extremely poor driving conditions.

The band posted a photo of the crash on Instagram. Luckily, the musicians were okay, and they even made it to Calgary in time for on-air interviews thanks to Alberta Music's new executive director Chris Wynters, who came to the band's rescue with a van that eventually got them to Calgary.

The show streamed live, and it's available to re-watch here

The Wet Secrets will begin spending their money almost immediately. They have a single with the songs "If I Was a Camera" and "I Can Swing a Hammer" out in January, and a studio album called Tyranny of Objects coming out in the fall of 2015. See the band's tour schedule below.

The contest was hosted by Calgary's 95.3 the PEAK. The Vancouver edition, meanwhile, was hosted by that city's 102.7 the PEAK. Last week (November 21), folksy BC six-piece Good for Grapes won the $102,700 grand prize, beating out runners-up Derrival (taking home $75,000) and the Tourist Company (winning $50,000).
