Montreal-based rapper Wasiu is readying his debut album for a summer release, but before it lands, Exclaim! has got the exclusive premiere of his latest single "Picture Imperfect."
The song draws on his experience of growing up as a child of divorce between his Nigerian Muslim father and Haitian Protestant-Christian mother. Wasiu channels the pent-up anger, frustration and turmoil from his past into the new track, which features his on-point rhymes backed by slick production from A$AP Mob member P on the Boards.
"The two main characters in this song are forced to smile for the camera while baring the weights of being in an abusive relationship for one and battling addiction for the other," Wasiu said in a statement about the song. "The overall theme of masking your pain in order to preserve face really hits home. Growing up in a divorced home it seemed like the number one goal was to make sure that everyone on the outside thought that everything was great on the inside, even if it killed us."
You can hear the resulting track in the player below right now, and stay tuned for details about the forthcoming full-length record.
