Two years after Vessel (a.k.a. Sebastian Gainsborough) delivered his Exclaim!-approved debut Order of Noise, the Brisbane-based electronic artist has announced his return. The UK soundscaper's sophomore set Punish, Honey comes September 16 through Tri Angle Records.
Though not abandoning the groundwork laid in his earlier material, a press release explains that Gainsborough's goal for Punish, Honey was to steer away from "archetypal electronic sounds" and towards a more organic experience. To accomplish this, Vessel utilized atypical instrumentation, including sheet metal as percussion, hand-crafted guitars and flutes apparently made out of sawed-up bikes. The results are said to fit album track "Euoi" with "medieval industrial tones" and proffered "Anima" with cinematic qualities.
The album's "crude instrumentation" also serves to score the album's national identity-seeking theme, with Vessel's latest song cycle asking the question, "'What does 'Englishness' in music really mean?'"
The first track being teased from the release is "Red Sex," a squelchy, hypnotic track focusing on Stomp-styled beats and warped synth work. A statement on Facebook from Gainsborough suggests you "put it on and go fuck someone you love." The single stream can be found beneath Punish, Honey's tracklisting.
