Hang Ten

BY Scott IngramPublished Sep 1, 1999

This one is a reissue of a ten song ten-inch record originally released in 1996, made all the more worthwhile by the addition of five more tracks. There is some good Canadian representation (you know what great surfers we are) with Mark Brodie and the Beaver Patrol in the opening slot, Cub doing an old cover of the Beach Boys’ “Surfer Girl,” and the McCrackins covering the Young Canadians’ “Hawaii.” The song I play over and over is the Kung Fu Monkeys’ “Summer School,” about how being stuck in summer school really sucks when all your friends are out playing on the beach. It is the perfect jangly teen-rock anthem. Other bands on this excellent compilation include Man Or Astro-Man?, J Church, the Queers, and Phranc with Satan’s Pilgrims.
