Brooklyn teen metal crew Unlocking the Truth made global headlines last year when they signed a massive five-album record contract with Sony Music worth $1.7 million US. Now, however, the youngsters are attempting to get out of that deal.
On Saturday night (March 14) in Austin, the band explained at the world premiere of their Breaking a Monster documentary that they are looking to sever ties with the major label, Billboard reports.
"Our attorneys are working on our exit from Sony now," guitarist/vocalist Malcolm Brickhouse said at the SXSW screening.
Though details on why the Brooklyn trio want out of the deal are unclear, band manager Alan Sacks confirmed the planned departure to Billboard. He added that no other information would be given at this time.
Brickhouse had started Unlocking the Truth in 2010 with drummer Jarad Dawkins and bassist Alec Atkins. By 2013, the group were busking in New York's Times Square, which is how they caught the attention of Sony. They've since gone on to play Coachella and make a commercial for Verizon.
The band have yet to release any material but had said back in 2014 that they had three albums' worth of songs. Filmmaker Luke Meyer's Breaking a Monster documentary reportedly shows the band recording a single called "Monster."
