The youngsters who make up Brooklyn metal trio Unlocking the Truth were already three of the coolest middle schoolers we've ever heard of, since their accomplishments include opening for Guns N' Roses, playing on the main stage at Coachella and performing at several dates on the Vans Warped Tour. Now, the band have inked a big record deal with Sony.
Unlocking the Truth — consisting of two 13-year-olds and a 12-year-old — have busked in Times Square, and video footage of this public performance subsequently made the rounds on the internet (see below). A Sony exec apparently contacted the band's manager upon seeing one of the videos.
The five-album deal will net the band $60,000 for the first album and increasing amounts for each subsequent album. All told, the deal is worth $1.7 million. That doesn't account for royalties, although the boys will apparently only see significant royalties on the first album after they sell more than 250,000 copies (a number that seems awfully high by today's standards).
"I'm so excited! We've made it!" drummer Jarad Dawkins told the New York Post.
According to the band's website, Unlocking the Truth have already written enough music for three albums. Their plan was to enter the studio this month to record an EP, but it's not clear if the deal with Sony has changed these plans.
A documentary detailing their rise to success is in the works as well.
