Nickelback have their share of detractors, but this seems a little extreme: on June 20, two Idaho men were detained by police, allegedly because they said the word "Nickelback."
The incident at a gas station in the city of Coeur d'Alene, ID, was captured on video by one of the men in question. Apparently, one of them made a comment about a driver in another car listening to Nickelback. A couple of police officers, however, overheard them and thought they were talking about a "nickel sack" of marijuana.
In the clip, the man filming repeatedly expresses bewilderment at being harassed, telling the cops that he just got off work and offering to let them search the van. At one point, they can be heard asking why one of the cops had drawn his gun (although this isn't shown in the clip), and one of the men is placed in handcuffs. While the men attempt to correct the misunderstanding, the cops dismiss the Nickelback explanation as "bullshit."

The men weren't charged. Lt. Stu Miller of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office told CDA Press, "It's being internally investigated. It's a personnel issue. We take this type of thing very seriously and we tell our people all the time to do their job as though someone is always watching, and they are always watching."
The officers in question, whose names have not been released, are still on duty.
Many are likely to take this as a lesson that Nickelback should be neither seen nor heard, nor spoken about in public.
