Following the release of last year's Bas As Me LP and news that he will appear in the film Seven Psychopaths, gravelly voiced cult favourite Tom Waits will be getting the cartoon treatment.

Waits is scheduled to appear on an upcoming episode of The Simpsons, joining the ranks of the Ramones, the Who and three quarters of the Beatles.

Waits's episode will play on the "prepper" trend and his role will involve helping Homer Simpson become a survivalist, though he won't be doing any singing.

Speaking to TVLine, show producer Al Jean explained: "We did a lot of research into the 'prepper' phenomenon, where people are convinced that some horrible catastrophe -- like an electromagnetic pulse -- is going to occur, and that people will have to survive without the grid." He concluded, "Homer becomes a prepper."

The episode is expected to air at some point in December, with guest stars like Justin Bieber, Zooey Deschanel, and Portlandia's Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein to appear in the same upcoming season.
