This week, Father John Misty returned with his new album I Love You, Honeybear. The record received critical acclaim, but not everyone's loving it — specifically, not the fans who purchased the deluxe edition of the album, which has a serious manufacturing defect.
Misty's label Sub Pop acknowledged the problem, taking full responsibility for it. Specifically, the deluxe version of the album comes in packaging so fancy that it warps the actual records within.
The label shared a detailed post about the problem on their site. They explained that the "bulging thickness of the pop-up art in the Father John Misty jacket creates a lump that, when the LPs are sealed and packed, pushes into the LPs, causing the vinyl to warp and making that handsome, painstakingly and expensively produced jacket an elaborate record-destroying device."
Sub Pop is currently pressing coloured vinyl to replace those records that we damaged in the deluxe edition of the album. If you purchased it through the label's site, you're asked to contact them. If you bought it elsewhere, contact your point of purchase.
Of course, if you're one of those people who just bought it for the fancy packaging and the download code, you may have not even noticed that your records were damaged, in which case you're welcome to carry on with your life.
