Following Southern Lord's recent pair of BL'AST archival releases, the label is now setting its sights on more California hardcore history via an expanded reissue of crossover crew Excel's debut album, Split Image. A press release from the label confirms that it will deliver a deluxe version of the set this August, though a specific street date has yet to be determined.
Split Image had initially been issued through Suicidal/Caroline in 1987, with a CD rerelease delivered through Rotten Records in 2000. The upcoming Southern Lord edition marks the first time the album has arrived on vinyl since the original pressing.
Produced by Randy Burns (Death, Megadeth, Kreator), Split Image was the group's first studio full-length and flexed Excel's skills at mixing punk, hardcore and thrash textures together. According to the press sheet, the outfit's "rabid musical approach and intelligent lyrics set them apart as a genre-defining act of the era."
Like the earlier CD reissue, this latest package adds the group's Sonic Decapitation, Personal Onslaught and Refuse to Quit demos, as well as "Insecurity" from Thrasher's Born to Skate compilation. The release will also feature alternative cover art and a photo booklet filled with previously unseen, era-specific photos.
A limited-edition cassette replicating the Personal Onslaught demo will also be up for grabs as a pre-order, though the item isn't up for grabs just yet.
Excel, meanwhile, reunited last year and will be playing Brooklyn's Saint Vitus Bar on June 17. More updates from the band are expected sometime soon, though it's unclear if that means more tour dates.
