Iconic Tacoma, WA garage rockers the Sonics have been maintaining a steady tour schedule over the past few years, which will now apparently have the band sliding new songs in between "Strychnine" and "The Witch." A new album called This Is the Sonics, their first set of original material since 1967, lands March 31 through the group's own Revox imprint.
The album finds vocalist Jerry Roslie, guitarist Larry Parypa and sax master Rob Lind joined by Kingsmen bassist Freddie Dennis and drummer Dusty Watson (Dick Dale/Agent Orange). Producer Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Dirtbombs) worked behind the boards for the recording sessions.
While a modified version of the band, fronted by Roslie, issued the catalogue-revisiting Sinderella LP in 1980, This Is the Sonics is the first collection of new tunes from the "Psycho" crew since 1967's Introducing the Sonics.
A tracklisting for the record has yet to be revealed, but the group have premiered the first single, titled "Bad Betty." Full of Roslie's patented wild man "yahoos," a raucous 12-bar melody, and barn-burner sax and organ solos, you'll find the high-tempo single down below. A different version of the track previously popped up on a Record Store Day split with Mudhoney.
The Sonics have also announced a spring tour, which has them playing shows with fellow Pacific Northwest legends Mudhoney and Barrence Whitfield & the Savages. A Canadian tour closer is booked at Toronto's Lee's Palace on April 26.
