Snake River

'Songs from the Adjacent Room' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Sep 1, 2015

Regina psych-folk unit Snake River will release their latest LP Songs from the Adjacent Room later this week, but before it lands, you can give it an early listen right here at Exclaim!

The album follows up 2014's McKruski, a concept album that documented the lives of residents in Snake River Mountain on an evening in February 1989. The new set of songs picks up on February 2, 1989, and zooms in on the characters of Reginald McKruski and his wife Jeanie McFeven-McKruski.

Kicking off with "Hours III: Jeanie Says," the album offers insight into the couple's relationship through snippets of present-day conversation and flashbacks from throughout their 16-year marriage. A hungover haze looms over most of the record, though "Mr. McKruski Exits the Party" revisits the evening that caused the booze-fuelled pain.

The couple's story is pieced together through "conversations, thoughts, memories, a letter and a dream" by band leader Chris Sleightholm, with fellow musicians Dustin Gamracy, Whistlin' Jeff M and John De Gennaro fleshing out the rootsy, sometimes psychedelic sound.

Songs from the Adjacent Room is out on September 4 via Prairie Shag, but you can hear it in its entirety right now in the player below. Scroll past the band's upcoming tour dates to give it a listen.
