Seattle Rapper Porter Ray Signs to Sub Pop, Shares New 'Fundamentals' Mixtape

BY Alex HudsonPublished Aug 1, 2014

Sub Pop is still often known for its more rock-leaning ways, but the imprint is starting to build something of a budding rap empire. Not only has the label recently released albums from clipping. and Shabazz Palaces, it has now signed Seattle MC Porter Ray.

The rapper reportedly caught the ear of Shabazz Palaces founder Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler (also of Digable Planets), who is part of a Sub Pop's A&R team. He was responsible for bringing the Ray into the fold.

Ray's official debut for the label will arrive in 2015. But even though that's still a ways off, the rapper just released his 17-song mixtape Fundamentals, which can be streamed below and downloaded on Bandcamp. This follows three EPs from 2013 (BLK GLD, WHT GLD, and RSE GLD).

Tonight (August 1), Ray will celebrate his signing by opening for Shabazz Palaces at Neumos in Seattle.
