Rodney DeCroo is set to adapt Allegheny, his 2012 set of "poem songs," into a live theatre experience as part of this year's Vancouver Fringe Festival.
A press release notes that Allegheny, BC runs September 5 to 15 at the Cultch, and it's based on both DeCroo's book of the same name and the Allegheny LP. The show has DeCroo, via poems, songs and monologues, recalling his childhood in a small coal town near Western Pennsylvania's Allegheny River, and "his coming of age struggles in the radically different world of Vancouver, BC, in the mid-1980s."
"It's a tough story, but redemptive too," DeCroo said in a statement. "It also involves all my areas of artistic experience: songwriting, poetry and acting. I used to be an actor and went to theatre school at Studio 58 in Vancouver."
Though billed as a one-man theatre show, Mark Haney accompanies DeCroo throughout the show on double bass, while lighting, video and set design duties are being handled by Gal Minnes.
