Red Hot Chili Peppers Recording with Danger Mouse?

BY Alex HudsonPublished Feb 2, 2015

Red Hot Chili Peppers have recorded all of their albums since the '90s with producer Rick Rubin, but as the veteran funksters hit the studio once again, they are seemingly switching gears and working with a new producer: Danger Mouse.

Flea apparently revealed the news in a tweet over the weekend, and although he deleted the message, Alternative Nation managed to get a screen grab before it was gone.

If this actually comes to pass, the team-up may well have an impact on the band's signature sound, since Rubin has been behind the boards on all of their most successful work. They first teamed up with him on 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which propelled them to become one of the world's most popular rock bands. They've been with Rubin ever since.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Danger Mouse is indeed on board for the band's next album. If so, he could take the band in a more ornate electronic direction, as is his classic sonic stamp.

It doesn't come as a complete surprise to learn that the Chili Peppers could be going in a new direction, as drummer Chad Smith said as much in a December interview with Rolling Stone.

He revealed, "We've got lots of songs, and we're working with an unnamed producer who is really challenging us to find new ways to come up with new music. We've done the 'guys get in the room and jam out songs, everybody playing together all at once' thing. And we wrote a bunch of songs that way. And we're now going to try another method that will be really challenging for us and will bring new, exciting results for the band. We've written and recorded in a way that we've never done before, so the record is going great. We all have high hopes that it's going to take off and we're going to do something very different and unique for the Red Hot Chili Peppers."

He added that auxiliary percussionist Mauro Refosco will be part of the as-yet-untitled record. Stay tuned for further updates about the collection.
