Patti Smith Plans New Memoir

Punk poet Patti Smith earned heaps of praise for her 2010 autobiography Just Kids, even netting a National Book Award for nonfiction. Having released the album Banga in 2012, Smith is now turning her focus back to the written word as she plans a follow-up memoir.

While Just Kids focused on Smith's relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in the late '60s and early '70s, this new book is slightly wider in scope. Smith told Billboard that the book will be similar in style to Just Kids, and will even cover a similar time period. But it will focus more on music, family and the singer's late husband Fred "Sonic" Smith.

Smith explained, "I don't have a big rock'n'roll lifestyle, a sex, drugs and rock'n'roll story to tell. I think I have maybe a better story. Through rock'n'roll I travelled the world, worked with my late brother [Todd] and, best of all, that's how I met Fred. It changed my life in many unexpected ways, so I have my story to tell."

This is apparently just one book of several that Smith currently has on the go, and she's still got a "year of work" ahead of her. In other words, don't expect this memoir to come out too soon. A title has yet to be confirmed.

Smith's progress on her book will be halted by some international touring in 2013. See her schedule here. While Smith is currently not plotting a new album, the songwriter confirmed that she is "always thinking of a lot of ideas. I'm interested in exploring new things."
