Nirvana's 'In Utero' Gets Record Store Day Tribute Album Featuring Jay Reatard, Ceremony, Thursday

BY Alex HudsonPublished Feb 20, 2014

Last year, Nirvana's classic 1993 album In Utero turned 20, and it received a deluxe reissue, plus a Canadian-geared tribute album. With all that excitement still fresh in our memory, Richmond, VA-based record label Robotic Empire has lined up its own awesome-looking tribute album. In Utero, in Tribute, in Entirety will be out on April 15, with an exclusive version for Record Store Day due on April 19.

As you'd expect from the title, the record features covers of all 12 tracks from In Utero. Each one is performed by a different artist, with contributors include Jay Reatard, Ceremony, Thursday, These Arms Are Snakes, Young Widows, Mean Jeans, Daughters, Circa Survive and more. See the tracklist below.

While this release seems timely, given In Utero's anniversary last year, it's actually been more than seven years in the making and has been subject to "extended delays and legal wrangling."

Reatard's version of "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" is apparently one of the last recordings he made before his passing in 2010. The song emerged online a few years ago and can be heard at the bottom of this page. However, this is the unmastered version and a proper-quality cover will emerge on the comp.

Furthermore, these are the last tracks to be released by Thursday, These Arms Are Snakes and Black Math Horseman.

The Record Store Day pressing will be limited to 1,000 copies on maroon vinyl, which come with a "huge poster."
